[Post-Surgery Guidelines for the First 3 Days] Hair Transplant Engraftment Period and Survival Rate
Many people are curious about how long the hair transplant engraftment period lasts and what the engraftment survival rate is. Since hairline correction surgery uses the patient’s own hair, various factors such as the characteristics of the follicles, environmental conditions, and genetics can lead to different responses, including variations in engraftment rate, duration, growth speed, and timing. Therefore, post-surgery care plays a significant role in determining the results. Here’s a summary of the key points you should check for post-surgery care and precautions during the recovery period.

To avoid complications from hairline correction surgery, it’s important to thoroughly evaluate the surgeon’s experience and skill in performing hairline correction procedures. (Photo – Immediately after female hairline correction surgery)

◆ Q. When can I return to my daily routine?
You can resume normal activities on the day of surgery, but since you might feel dizzy after the procedure due to fasting for an extended period, it’s best to avoid driving and instead have a good meal and rest at home if possible. It’s best to sleep on your back, as lying face down or on your side can irritate the transplanted area. For the first two weeks after surgery, the follicles are in the engraftment period, so avoid any physical irritation to the transplant site. You can start taking painkillers on the day of surgery if needed. If the pain is severe, you may take up to two pills at once, then continue taking them every four hours as needed.

◆Q. How long should I spray the saline solution, and how should I do it?
It’s recommended to spray the transplanted area every 10–20 minutes until the bleeding stops. If you’ve used all the saline provided by the clinic, do not throw away the empty bottle. You can refill it with sterile saline purchased from a pharmacy and continue using it for about two weeks. This helps reduce redness, scabs, and itching.

◆Q. I noticed some blood on the back of my head.
On the day of surgery, the FUE extraction area remains open, so slight bleeding may occur for 2–3 days, and you might feel some discomfort during shampooing. If you are worried about pain, you can take the painkillers provided by the clinic every four hours. When sleeping, use the pillow cover provided in the post-surgery kit.

◆ Q. How should I care for the FUSS(FUT) area?
Please disinfect the FUSS(FUT) area once a day using the hydrogen peroxide provided by the clinic. (For 2 weeks)
Open a pack of sterile gauze (5 pieces per pack), soak it in the hydrogen peroxide solution,
and gently disinfect along the FUSS(FUT) line. Be sure to wash your hands thoroughly before disinfecting to prevent infection.
(Note: Do not use hydrogen peroxide on the transplanted area.)
◆ Q. When should I eat and take the prescribed medications?
You can eat as usual. Take the prescribed medications after meals, starting the morning after the surgery.

◆ Q. The transplanted area feels very itchy. Is there anything I can do?
As the tissue recovers, the transplanted area may become itchy. Spraying EGF tonic (engraftment spray) or saline frequently can help alleviate the itching. Store the engraftment spray in the refrigerator and spray it every 1–2 hours to keep the area from drying out. It’s best to use it all within the first 3 days after surgery. Do not scratch the transplanted area for at least 2 weeks. Scabs may form, but do not forcefully remove them.

◆ Q. When will the redness go away?
The redness in the transplanted area usually fades within 1 to 2 weeks, but for those with more sensitive skin, it may last up to a month.
◆ Q. What shampoo should I use for the transplanted area?
You can continue using your regular shampoo. However, using a special foam shampoo containing EGF, specifically designed for the transplanted area, can help with recovery and engraftment. (Available for purchase at the clinic.)
