Can Botox Be Used for Hair Loss Treatment? - Hair Transplant

Nabota is a Botox product developed by Daewoong Pharmaceutical,

But can Botox really be effective for hair loss?

While it is not fully understood how male hormones cause
follicle degradation in male pattern baldness,
it has been revealed that DHT,
a derivative of male hormones,
increases a signaling molecule called TGF-β1.

The botulinum toxin in Botox helps suppress this TGF-β1,
which means that injecting Botox into the scalp
where hair loss is occurring can potentially slow down
the progression of hair loss.

Additionally, from the experience of treating many patients with advanced hair loss, we know that the scalp often becomes stiff and tense overall. By injecting botulinum toxin, the surrounding muscles are relaxed, improving scalp circulation, which in turn may help improve hair loss. Better blood flow increases oxygen saturation, which boosts the breakdown of male hormones.

Are there actual cases of improvement?

According to a 2019 study in Shanghai, China,
when Botox was injected into the scalp muscles of 25 male subjects,
11 showed more than a 10% improvement, 8 experienced slight improvement,
and 5 showed no improvement.
Additionally, 19 of the patients saw a reduction in scalp oil production.

In a domestic study by Professor Park Byung-chul of Kyungpook National University,
statistically significant hair loss treatment results were observed
when botulinum toxin was injected once a month for six months.

However, unlike the Shanghai study,
Professor Park’s research focused on injecting the botulinum toxin
into the dermal-fat junction of the scalp,
where hair follicles are located, rather than into the scalp muscles.
No significant side effects were observed,
and further research is planned for the future.
