How Noticeable is the Scar from Hairline Correction Surgery with FUSS (FUT)?

Many people wonder about the extent of scarring on the back of the head and whether it will disappear or how long it will be uncomfortable if they undergo hairline correction surgery using the FUSS (FUT) method, which involves follicle extraction through scalp FUSS (FUT). Some reviews of FUSS hairline correction mention significant scarring and a lack of hair in those areas.

If you believe that FUSS hairline correction inevitably results in long-lasting scars, that is a clear misconception. The scar condition and the presence of any side effects depend significantly on the skill and expertise of the surgeon performing the follicle extraction and suturing.

At our clinic, we often see patients who previously had hairline correction surgery at other clinics using the FUSS method and were left with large, noticeable scars on the back of their heads with no hair growing around the scar. Some also reported suffering from prolonged pain in the back of the head after surgery.

To avoid post-surgical complications such as scarring, pain, and permanent follicle loss leading to reduced hair density, it is crucial to consult a specialist with extensive experience in scalp FUSS (FUT) and suturing techniques.

Some people have relatively soft scalps, while others have firmer scalps. Likewise, some have thin skin, while others have thicker skin. Due to these individual differences in scalp elasticity and skin thickness, and especially for those prone to scarring, it is crucial to tailor the FUSS(FUT) and suturing techniques to these unique skin characteristics. Failure to do so can result in large, long-lasting scars or even the separation of the sutured area. To prevent a decrease in hair density on the back of the head due to permanent follicle loss at the FUSS (FUT) site, it is essential to consider several detailed factors, such as the direction of follicle growth, the ratio of anagen (growth phase) to telogen (resting phase), and the density and thickness of the hair when determining the scope and location of the FUSS(FUT).

To minimize pain or discomfort in the back of the head due to FUSS (FUT) surgery and to prevent post-surgical complications, it is crucial to handle the procedure delicately under a high-magnification surgical microscope to avoid damaging the scalp’s blood vessels and fine nerves.

If the sutures are done roughly or with excessive tension, the fine nerves around the follicles can be compressed or damaged, causing pain, follicular dropout around the area, prolonged scarring, and an uneven scalp in the donor area. The know-how of plastic surgery techniques for double fine suturing is essential to minimize scarring and ensure it fades quickly.

At our clinic, for patients with wide and enlarged scars from previous hairline correction surgeries at other clinics, we provide scar revision surgery or hair transplant surgery on the scar area if needed.

For large-scale transplants of more than 3,500 hairs, we also perform a hybrid method combining FUE and FUSS (FUT) to minimize the FUSS (FUT) scar. Patients who have undergone FUSS (FUT) hairline correction at our clinic often report comfort even the day after the surgery. I’ll conclude this message with an 8-month post-operative video of a male patient who underwent a hybrid method transplant of 4,000 hairs.
